How to renovate and refurbish your staircase

A feature staircase is the first thing you see that can add a “wow” factor when you enter a home.

Before and After Staircase Makeover

If you are adding an extension, renovating your home or simply want to open up and modernise an old stairwell it’s a good time to consult with a Staircase Specialist.

The layout is the most important aspect. When you are considering the Staircase space the whole entrance should be considered.

From design to installation usually takes a minimum of 4-6 weeks, depending on the complexity of the design and the scale of the project.

When replacing a staircase, you may also be able to change the direction of traffic and remodel the staircase composition and design to incorporate modern Staircase options.

A bespoke staircase should be empathetic to the property. Once the layout has been defined you can then start thinking about style and materials. As Staircase Makeover Specialists our experience affords us the ability and insight to incorporate both traditional and contemporary materials into a commission that will stand the test of time.

Every Timber Floors Pty Ltd staircase is totally bespoke, designed and built completely from scratch in the company’s Smithfield Factory.

If the staircase is structurally sound but looking tired and needing of an update, one option is to wrap solid Australian Hardwood treads. We can also replace the balustrade and handrail. The choice is generally between glass, timber, metal or a combination of.

Newels are the anchor of a staircase. A newel post serves as a support pole that helps bear the weight of the rest of the staircase. Newels are always found at the base of a flight of stairs and you will also find newels at the top of the staircase. Newels are also placed at junctures where the staircase changes directions. So for every change in direction on the staircase, whether it’s a transition to a level landing or a 90º turn, you will need a newel to complete that turn.

The most effective way to transform the look of the hallway and staircase is to replace large timber spindles with glass or slim metal uprights. Glass balustrades remain high on the wish list for many of our clients refurbishing a staircase in a contemporary interior and can increase the amount of light.

All our wooden Balustrades are made to order in our Factory.

Our specialty is wooden handrails however we also offer metal and polished stainless steel.

Perhaps you have not considered the option of completely remaking your existing staircase with new solid Australian hardwood stringers, we can help you choose if this is a more affordable option.

If space allows then feature treads can be added to the base of an existing staircase to improve both the look and flow of the staircase and surrounding area.
